What happened

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the national observance of the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) at the historic Red Road, Kolkata, performing the Common Yoga Protocol under the 2026 theme 'Yoga for Healthy Ageing'.
He said Yoga helps people stay healthy and energetic as they age, invoked the Bhagavad Gita's idea of balance, and urged citizens not to limit Yoga to a single day.
He highlighted the Ministry of Ayush's 'Yoga 365' initiative and a 100-day online Yoga programme that drew over 30 lakh people across 130 countries.
Registrations on the Yoga Sangam Portal crossed six lakh organisations; through the ICCR, over 210 Indian Missions held celebrations across nearly 2,500 locations worldwide.
The Ministry of Culture with the ASI organised Yoga events at 100 iconic heritage sites; the Ayush Minister noted IDY is now observed in more than 180 countries.
