NMDC pushes digital, sustainable mining at Donimalai for 100-MTPA goal

India's largest iron-ore producer NMDC reviewed digitalisation, capacity expansion and beneficiation of low-grade ore at its Donimalai complex in Karnataka, as it works towards a 100-million-tonnes-a-year vision.

What happened

For Prelims

For UPSC: NMDC reviewed digital and sustainable mining at Donimalai, beneficiating low-grade ore (BHJ/BHQ/slimes) towards a 100-MTPA vision. Anchor NMDC (largest iron-ore producer, Navratna under the Ministry of Steel), beneficiation and mineral conservation, ore grades (% Fe), the steel sector and National Steel Policy 2017 (300 MT by 2030), and responsible/sustainable mining.
What it is NOT: NMDC is a mining company (iron ore) under the Ministry of Steel — distinct from steelmakers like SAIL. Beneficiation upgrades the iron content of low-grade ore so it can be used; it is not smelting/steelmaking. The 100 MTPA is NMDC's production vision, not a current figure.

For Mains

Syllabus: GS3.8 · GS3.14 · Linkage L2

Anchor
Resource efficiency and responsible mining — digitalisation and beneficiation to expand usable reserves while cutting waste.
Substantiation (data)
NMDC at Donimalai: targets 10 MTPA (Kumaraswamy) + 17 MTPA (Donimalai) towards a 100-MTPA vision; beneficiates up to 35% Fe ore, BHJ, BHQ and slimes.
Exemplification
Cite NMDC's beneficiation and automated dispatch (with mineral conservation) as examples of sustainable, technology-led mining for the steel value chain.
Problematisation
Mining's environmental and community footprint, low-grade-ore economics, and balancing expansion with sustainability remain challenges.
Way-forward
Scale beneficiation and digital monitoring, embed ESG and community welfare, and align ore supply with the steel sector's 2030 capacity goals.
Position
Government/PSU stance: responsible, digitalised mining and beneficiation conserve minerals and secure raw materials for a growing steel sector.
Deploys into: Mining & mineral conservation (NMDC, beneficiation) · steel value chain & raw-material security (National Steel Policy) · sustainable mining & ESG · PSU governance (GS3.8 industrial growth & resources, GS3.14 conservation & environment).
