'Nirbhay Chetna' to sensitise 17.5 lakh male representatives on women's safety

Under the Nirbhaya Fund, the Panchayati Raj Ministry rolled out 'Nirbhay Chetna' — billed as the world's largest drive to sensitise male elected representatives on women's safety and gender equality at the grassroots, with a cadre of 28,500 master trainers.

What happened

• The Ministry of Panchayati Raj rolled out 'Nirbhay Chetna', a national initiative under the Nirbhaya Fund to sensitise over 17.5 lakh male elected representatives on women's safety, security and gender equality at the grassroots.
• Described as the largest drive of its kind in the world, it was launched with a training module (by Transform Rural India) during a three-day Training of Trainers on 17-19 June 2026.
• It will create a cadre of around 28,500 master trainers who will engage male representatives on gender equality, women's rights, safety and leadership within Panchayati Raj Institutions.
• A pilot batch of about 40 master trainers from six states — Assam, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha and Uttarakhand — will seed a cascading training model for all states and UTs.
• Officials stressed that the vision of Viksit Bharat cannot be realised without the safety, dignity and equal participation of women.
