The Indian Navy will commission a stealth frigate (Dunagiri), a survey vessel (Sanshodhak) and an anti-submarine craft (Agray) at Kolkata in a rare triple induction — all built by GRSE with over 75% indigenous content.
What happened
- The Indian Navy will commission three indigenously built frontline platforms — Dunagiri, Sanshodhak and Agray — at Kolkata on 21 June 2026, with the Prime Minister presiding.
- Designed by the Navy's Warship Design Bureau and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata, they span maritime combat, hydrographic surveying and anti-submarine warfare.
- Dunagiri is the fifth Project 17A stealth frigate, equipped with BrahMos surface-to-surface missiles and the Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) system.
- Sanshodhak is the fourth Survey Vessel (Large) for hydrographic surveys, and Agray is the fourth Arnala-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft.
- The platforms have over 75% indigenous content and involved more than 200 MSMEs, reflecting India's maturing shipbuilding ecosystem under Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

For UPSC: The Navy will commission three indigenous GRSE-built platforms at Kolkata — Dunagiri (Project 17A stealth frigate), Sanshodhak (survey vessel) and Agray (Arnala-class ASW craft) — with 75%+ indigenous content. Anchor Project 17A/Nilgiri-class, the Warship Design Bureau, GRSE and India's naval DPSU yards, BrahMos/MRSAM, ASW and hydrography, and Aatmanirbhar Bharat in shipbuilding.
What it is NOT: The three vessels serve different roles — a stealth frigate (combat), a survey vessel (hydrography) and an ASW shallow-water craft (coastal sub-hunting) — not three of a kind. Project 17A (Nilgiri-class) frigates follow the Project 17 (Shivalik-class); 'commissioning' is formal induction into service, distinct from launch or delivery.
