Navy to commission three indigenous warships together at Kolkata

The Indian Navy will commission a stealth frigate (Dunagiri), a survey vessel (Sanshodhak) and an anti-submarine craft (Agray) at Kolkata in a rare triple induction — all built by GRSE with over 75% indigenous content.

What happened

For Prelims

For UPSC: The Navy will commission three indigenous GRSE-built platforms at Kolkata — Dunagiri (Project 17A stealth frigate), Sanshodhak (survey vessel) and Agray (Arnala-class ASW craft) — with 75%+ indigenous content. Anchor Project 17A/Nilgiri-class, the Warship Design Bureau, GRSE and India's naval DPSU yards, BrahMos/MRSAM, ASW and hydrography, and Aatmanirbhar Bharat in shipbuilding.
What it is NOT: The three vessels serve different roles — a stealth frigate (combat), a survey vessel (hydrography) and an ASW shallow-water craft (coastal sub-hunting) — not three of a kind. Project 17A (Nilgiri-class) frigates follow the Project 17 (Shivalik-class); 'commissioning' is formal induction into service, distinct from launch or delivery.

Anchor
Self-reliant naval power — indigenous warship design and construction strengthening maritime capability and the defence industrial base.
Substantiation (data)
Three GRSE-built platforms commissioned at Kolkata: Dunagiri (5th Project 17A frigate), Sanshodhak (survey), Agray (Arnala-class ASW); 75%+ indigenous content, 200+ MSMEs.
Exemplification
Cite the triple commissioning (with Project 17A and ASW craft) as evidence of a maturing indigenous shipbuilding ecosystem under Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
Problematisation
Dependence on imported engines/sensors, long build timelines, and scaling MSME and design capacity remain constraints for naval self-reliance.
Way-forward
Deepen indigenous content (propulsion, sensors), strengthen design (WDB) and MSME ecosystems, and sustain a steady warship-building pipeline.
Position
Government stance: indigenous commissionings demonstrate India's growing maritime strength and self-reliance in defence shipbuilding.
Deploys into: Indigenous warship-building & Aatmanirbhar defence (Project 17A, GRSE) · maritime security & blue-water capability · MSMEs in defence (GS3.12 indigenisation & new technology, GS3.17 security & defence).
