PM to lay stone for India's first commercial coal-to-ammonium-nitrate plant
A Rs 25,016 crore coal-gasification project in Odisha will convert domestic coal into ammonium nitrate and other chemicals — a push for energy security and import substitution as India targets gasifying 100 MT of coal by 2030.
What happened
- The Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone of India's first commercial-scale coal-to-ammonium-nitrate project — a Rs 25,016 crore coal-gasification plant at Lakhanpur, Jharsuguda district, Odisha — on 20 June 2026.
- It is framed as a step for energy security, import substitution and industrial self-reliance.
- Coal gasification converts coal into synthesis gas (syngas), which can yield value-added products such as methanol, urea, ammonium nitrate and synthetic natural gas.
- India is the world's second-largest producer and consumer of coal (Coal India Limited being the largest producer globally) and holds the fifth-largest coal reserves, over 400 billion tonnes.
- The Government has approved incentives of up to Rs 46,000 crore for surface coal/lignite gasification, supporting the target of gasifying 100 MT of coal by 2030 and cutting ~Rs 2.7 lakh crore of annual chemical imports.
