India to set up a long-term Himalayan climate-monitoring station
IITM Pune and ARIES signed a 50-year MoU to establish a high-altitude climate observation station at Devasthal under the Bharat Climate Observation Network (BCON), part of the Mission Mausam push for high-quality climate data.
What happened
- The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune signed an MoU with the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), Nainital, on 18 June 2026 for a long-term climate station.
- The station, at ARIES, Devasthal, will be part of the Bharat Climate Observation Network (BCON); the MoU runs for more than fifty years.
- It will support long-term observations of meteorological parameters, climate-active trace gases (greenhouse gases and short-lived climate forcers), atmospheric chemistry and soil moisture.
- Devasthal's high-altitude, relatively pristine setting is ideal for capturing baseline atmospheric features and studying climate-relevant pollutant transport over the Himalaya.
- BCON is conceptualised and implemented by IITM under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (within Mission Mausam) to build a high-precision climate-monitoring framework and dataset.
