Railways plans a dedicated network to haul fly ash for reuse
Indian Railways is developing specialised wagons and corridors to move fly ash from thermal power plants to cement, brick and road builders — turning a major coal-combustion waste into a construction resource.
What happened
- At a review chaired by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Indian Railways discussed an initiative to enable large-scale transportation of fly ash across the rail network.
- The aim is to move fly ash efficiently from thermal power plants to industries that use it to build roads, make bricks, produce cement and support construction.
- Around 340 million tonnes of fly ash is generated each year from thermal power plants; Railways plans a dedicated logistics network of specialised containers and rail corridors.
- Used correctly, fly ash is a raw material for cement, concrete, blocks and boards; cheaper supply can lower the cost of bricks, cement and housing.
