A Rural Development review set a target of building 26,474 km of rural roads at Rs 18,907 crore in FY 2026-27, pushing states to saturate last-mile connectivity for unconnected and tribal habitations.
What happened
- The Government has earmarked Rs 18,907 crore in FY 2026-27 to build 26,474 km of rural roads under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) and related initiatives.
- A high-level Ministry of Rural Development review, chaired by Secretary Rohit Kansal, assessed state-wise physical and financial progress under PMGSY and the Road Connectivity Project for LWE Affected Areas (RCPLWEA).
- The Secretary stressed saturation of rural connectivity in left-out areas, directing states to complete remaining unconnected habitations under PMGSY-I and PM-JANMAN, with attention to PVTG habitations.
- States were urged to fast-track Detailed Project Reports (DPRs), resolve execution bottlenecks, strengthen quality monitoring and ensure universal adoption of the e-MARG platform.
- Progress under RCPLWEA in Left Wing Extremism-affected districts was reviewed, given the strategic importance of road infrastructure there.

- Don't confuse: PMGSY (a Centrally Sponsored rural-roads scheme, 60:40 funding) is distinct from the National Highways programme (Bharatmala/MoRTH); 'saturation' means connecting all eligible left-out habitations.
