Over 1.7 lakh organisers register on the Yoga Sangam Portal for Yoga Day
Ahead of the 12th International Day of Yoga on 21 June, Ayush's relaunched Yoga Sangam Portal has drawn over 1.7 lakh event registrations for synchronised, mass yoga demonstrations under the Common Yoga Protocol.
What happened
- The Ministry of Ayush's relaunched Yoga Sangam Portal has emerged as the digital backbone of the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY), with over 1.7 lakh organisers having registered their events.
- IDY is to be observed on 21 June 2026; Yoga Sangam is a flagship IDY initiative of synchronised, mass yoga demonstrations following the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP).
- The portal connects schools, colleges, resident welfare associations, government bodies, private organisations and civil-society groups, enabling online registrations for a distributed national event.
- It was relaunched by MoS (I/C) Ayush Prataprao Jadhav during the 25-day countdown at Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh; partner organisations hold simultaneous sessions across thousands of locations.
- The initiative builds on Yoga Sangam's debut during IDY 2025, when more than 10 lakh locations were synchronised; the 2026 theme is 'Yoga for Healthy Ageing'.
For Prelims
- International Day of Yoga (IDY): Observed on 21 June; proclaimed by the UNGA via Resolution 69/131 (11 December 2014) on India's proposal (with 175 co-sponsors); first observed in 2015. 2026 is the 12th IDY, themed 'Yoga for Healthy Ageing', with the main national event in Kolkata.
- Common Yoga Protocol (CYP): A standardised ~45-minute sequence of asanas/pranayama used for mass IDY demonstrations so participants worldwide practise the same routine.
- Yoga Sangam: A mass-participation programme of synchronised yoga sessions at thousands of locations; its portal coordinates organiser registrations.
- Ministry of Ayush: Covers Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa-Rigpa and Homoeopathy and leads IDY.
- Soft power & heritage: Yoga is inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of Intantible Cultural Heritage (2016) and is a flagship of India's soft power.
- Whole-of-society delivery: Roping in PRIs, ULBs, RWAs, schools and corporates reflects a community-mobilisation model for grassroots wellness and preventive health.
- Don't confuse: Yoga Sangam (synchronised mass-demonstration programme/portal) is distinct from the Yoga Park Portal (developing parks into wellness spaces) and from IDY itself (21 June).
For UPSC: Ayush's relaunched Yoga Sangam Portal — the digital backbone of IDY 2026 — has 1.7 lakh+ registered organisers for synchronised mass yoga under the Common Yoga Protocol. Anchor IDY (UNGA Res 69/131, 2014; 21 June; 12th edition; theme 'Yoga for Healthy Ageing'), the CYP, Yoga Sangam vs the Yoga Park Portal, the Ministry of Ayush's six systems, and yoga as UNESCO ICH/soft power.
What it is NOT: Yoga Sangam (the synchronised mass-demonstration programme and its portal) is distinct from the Yoga Park Portal (which develops parks into wellness spaces) and from International Day of Yoga itself (21 June). The portal coordinates registrations — it is an enabling platform, not a cash-benefit scheme.
For Mains
Syllabus: GS2.13 · GS1.1 · Linkage L1
Anchor
Preventive health and mass mobilisation — using digital coordination to scale grassroots yoga as community wellness.
Substantiation (data)
Yoga Sangam Portal: 1.7 lakh+ organisers for IDY 2026 (12th IDY, 21 June, 'Yoga for Healthy Ageing'); built on IDY 2025's 10 lakh+ synchronised locations.
Exemplification
Cite Yoga Sangam and the Common Yoga Protocol (with Ayushman Arogya Mandirs) as examples of community-led preventive healthcare and traditional-knowledge promotion.
Problematisation
Sustaining year-round practice beyond the IDY event, ensuring inclusive reach, and converting registrations into habitual wellness are challenges.
Way-forward
Institutionalise 'Yoga 365', integrate with preventive-health programmes, and leverage digital platforms and local bodies for continuous engagement.
Position
Government stance: digital coordination via Yoga Sangam deepens the grassroots reach of yoga and India's role as the global home of yoga.
Deploys into: Preventive healthcare & wellness (yoga, Ayush) · soft power & traditional knowledge (IDY/UNESCO ICH) · community mobilisation & e-governance · healthy ageing (GS2.13 health & social sector, GS1.1 art & culture).
