A 'Smart Warehousing System' to modernise India's foodgrain storage

The Food Ministry is launching an AI- and IoT-enabled Smart Warehousing System to automate and monitor public foodgrain depots, alongside recognition of top CWC and FCI warehouses under the 'Depot Darpan' framework.

What happened

For Prelims

For UPSC: The Food Ministry is launching an AI/IoT-based Smart Warehousing System to modernise public foodgrain depots, with top CWC and FCI warehouses recognised under 'Depot Darpan'. Anchor FCI (1964 Act) and CWC (1962 Act), the NFSA 2013 and TPDS, buffer-stock norms, post-harvest/storage losses, and tech-led reform of food-storage infrastructure.
What it is NOT: The Smart Warehousing System is a technology/governance upgrade for depot management — not a new procurement scheme or a change to NFSA entitlements. FCI (procurement/buffer stocks) and CWC (scientific warehousing) are distinct statutory/PSU bodies; Depot Darpan is an assessment framework, not a subsidy.

Syllabus: GS3.5 · GS3.4 · Linkage L2

Anchor
Food security and supply-chain modernisation — digitising public storage to cut losses and strengthen the PDS backbone.
Substantiation (data)
Smart Warehousing System (AI/IoT/automation) for foodgrain depots; CWC and FCI warehouses rated under Depot Darpan; launch at Bharat Mandapam, 18 June 2026.
Exemplification
Cite Smart Warehousing and Depot Darpan (with modern silos/Depot Online System) as examples of technology-led reform of buffer-stock and PDS infrastructure.
Problematisation
Storage gaps, post-harvest losses, ageing depots, and uneven adoption of technology across the network challenge food-security efficiency.
Way-forward
Scale AI/IoT monitoring and modern silos, expand performance benchmarking (Depot Darpan), and integrate procurement-storage-distribution digitally.
Position
Government stance: technology-led, well-monitored warehousing strengthens India's food-security architecture and the efficiency of public storage.
Deploys into: Food security & buffer-stock management (FCI/CWC, NFSA) · post-harvest losses & storage infrastructure · e-governance in PDS · agri supply chains (GS3.5 buffer stocks & food security, GS3.4 storage & transport of agri produce).
