New Chairperson and members appointed to the National Statistical Commission

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet cleared a new part-time Chairperson and three members for the NSC — the apex advisory body that sets standards for India's official statistics.

What happened

For Prelims

For UPSC: The ACC appointed a new Chairperson (Dr Saibal Chattopadhyay) and members to the National Statistical Commission, the apex body for India's official statistics. Anchor the NSC (set up by resolution in 2005 on the Rangarajan Commission's recommendation; non-statutory, advisory), its composition (part-time Chair + 4 members + NITI Aayog CEO ex-officio), MoSPI and key indicators (GDP/CPI/IIP/PLFS), and its role in data credibility.
What it is NOT: The NSC is a non-statutory, autonomous advisory body set up by a 2005 government resolution — NOT a constitutional or statutory body created by an Act. Its members are part-time; the CEO of NITI Aayog is an ex-officio member, and the Secretary MoSPI is the Secretary (not a member with vote).

Anchor
Credibility of official statistics — institutional stewardship of data standards as a foundation of evidence-based governance.
Substantiation (data)
NSC (set up 2005 on Rangarajan Commission's recommendation; non-statutory): part-time Chair + 4 members + NITI Aayog CEO ex-officio; new Chair Dr Saibal Chattopadhyay.
Exemplification
Cite the NSC's standard-setting and coordination role (with MoSPI's NSS/PLFS/GDP releases) as the backbone of trustworthy public data.
Problematisation
Data-quality concerns, release delays, the NSC's non-statutory status and limited enforcement powers have raised questions about statistical autonomy.
Way-forward
Strengthen the NSC (statutory backing has been debated), ensure timely, transparent releases, and insulate official statistics from interference.
Position
Government stance: appointing eminent statisticians reinforces the NSC's role in evolving standards and improving public trust in official statistics.
Deploys into: Statutory/advisory institutions & official statistics (NSC, MoSPI) · evidence-based governance & data credibility · institutional autonomy (GS2.9 statutory/regulatory bodies, GS2.15 governance & transparency).
