IDY 2026 theme is 'Yoga for Healthy Ageing', with PM Modi to lead the 21 June event from Kolkata

At the curtain-raiser for the 12th International Day of Yoga, Ayush unveiled the 2026 theme — pitching yoga as a pathway to active, dignified ageing — with the national event on Kolkata's Red Road and celebrations at 2,500 locations worldwide.

What happened

For Prelims

For UPSC: IDY 2026's theme is 'Yoga for Healthy Ageing', with PM Modi leading the 21 June national event from Kolkata's Red Road and 2,500 global venues. Anchor IDY's origin (UNGA Res 69/131, 2014, 175 co-sponsors, first 2015), the Ministry of Ayush/MDNIY, the Common Yoga Protocol, yoga as soft power and UNESCO ICH (2016), the WHO traditional-medicine centre, and the ageing/longevity public-health angle.
What it is NOT: The 15 June curtain-raiser and 14 June Guinness record are run-up events — IDY itself is observed on 21 June. 'Yoga for Healthy Ageing' is the 2026 annual theme (themes change each year), not a permanent slogan; 'Ayush' is the ministry/system grouping, not one therapy.
