Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth named the next Chief of the Army Staff from 30 June 2026

The current Vice Chief, an Armoured Corps officer who has commanded the Sudarshan Chakra Corps and two operational commands, will take over as the new Army Chief when Gen Upendra Dwivedi retires.

What happened

• The Government has appointed Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth (PVSM, UYSM, AVSM), presently the Vice Chief of the Army Staff, as the next Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) with effect from the afternoon of 30 June 2026.
• The present Chief, General Upendra Dwivedi (PVSM, AVSM), retires from service the same day.
• Lt Gen Seth is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla, and was commissioned into the Armoured Corps in December 1986; his career spans nearly four decades across operational, strategic, capability-development and institutional domains.
• His command assignments include an armoured regiment in the Desert Sector, an armoured brigade in the Western Theatre, a Counter-Insurgency Force in Jammu & Kashmir, and the Sudarshan Chakra Corps — one of the Army's premier strike formations.
• On elevation to Army Commander he led both South Western Command and Southern Command — a rare distinction of commanding two operational commands — providing strategic oversight across critical theatres.

• Chief of the Army Staff (COAS): The professional head of the Indian Army (one of the three service chiefs), a four-star General. The COAS is distinct from the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), who heads the Department of Military Affairs and is the principal military adviser.
• Appointment of service chiefs: Service chiefs are appointed by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC); the President is the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces (Article 53).
• Army commands: The Indian Army has seven commands — Northern, Eastern, Western, South Western, Southern, Central and the Army Training Command (ARTRAC). Each is led by a Lieutenant General (Army Commander).
• Armoured Corps: The Army's tank/mechanised arm; the 'Sudarshan Chakra Corps' (21 Corps) is a strike corps. Knowing arms (Infantry, Armoured, Artillery, etc.) helps place officers' backgrounds.
• Gallantry/distinguished-service decorations: PVSM (Param Vishisht Seva Medal), UYSM (Uttam Yudh Seva Medal), AVSM (Ati Vishisht Seva Medal) are distinguished-service awards — context for senior appointments.
• NDA: The National Defence Academy (Khadakwasla, Pune) is the tri-service academy training cadets for the Army, Navy and Air Force before pre-commission training.
• Don't confuse: The COAS (head of the Army) is NOT the CDS (head of the integrated military structure/DMA); and the President is the constitutional Supreme Commander, not an operational commander.
