Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train: India's first high-speed rail corridor takes shape
The 508-km MAHSR corridor, built with Japan's Shinkansen technology and JICA funding, aims to transform inter-city mobility while building India's domestic high-speed-rail capability.
What happened
- The Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project — India's first high-speed rail corridor — represents a major milestone in India's railway modernisation, seeking to transform inter-city mobility.
- The 508-km corridor passes through Maharashtra, Gujarat and Dadra & Nagar Haveli, and combines high-speed passenger transport with extensive infrastructure — viaducts, tunnels, bridges, stations, and signalling and power systems.
- It is built using Japan's Shinkansen technology, with JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) financing about 80% of the project cost; the executing agency is the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL).
- The foundation stone was laid in September 2017, marking the start of India's high-speed-rail journey; the corridor is designed for speeds around 320 km/h.
- Beyond cutting travel time, the project is building technical expertise, industrial capacity and institutional knowledge that will support the future expansion of high-speed rail across India.
