Odisha turns monsoon rain into groundwater recharge under 'Jal Sanchay, Jan Bhagidari'
From school rooftops to community ponds and recharge wells, the State is channelling rainwater into depleted aquifers — a whole-of-society model of source-level water conservation.
What happened
- As the monsoon arrives, Odisha is driving a groundwater-recharge effort — from school rooftops in Jajpur and community ponds in Cuttack to recharge wells in Ganjam — under the 'Jal Sanchay, Jan Bhagidari' (JSJB) initiative.
- Guided by a 'Whole of Government, Whole of Society' approach, the State is capturing rainwater where it falls and recharging it into underground aquifers to build water security against future stress.
- Rainwater from schools, colleges, government offices and institutional buildings is collected, filtered and channelled into recharge wells, replenishing depleted aquifers.
- Simultaneously, recharge structures within ponds, tanks and water bodies let surplus monsoon runoff percolate deep into the ground rather than be lost as surface flow.
- In Jajpur, the district built 117 recharge shafts under the ARUA scheme and installed 114 Rooftop Rainwater Harvesting Systems under the CHHATA scheme (between 2022-23 and 2025-26) — restoring groundwater levels and combining government action with community participation.
