India and Nepal link UPI with Nepal's NPI for instant cross-border money transfers

A direct linkage between India's Unified Payments Interface and Nepal's National Payments Interface enables seamless, real-time person-to-person remittances — deepening digital and economic integration with a neighbour.

What happened

For Prelims

For UPSC: India and Nepal linked UPI with Nepal's National Payments Interface (via NIPL and NCHL) for instant P2P cross-border remittances — extending India's UPI internationalisation to the neighbourhood. Anchor UPI/NPCI/NIPL, the list of countries where UPI is live, the P2P-vs-P2M distinction, India's status as the top remittance recipient, and 'Neighbourhood First' digital connectivity with Nepal.
What it is NOT: This launch enables cross-border P2P remittances by bridging two separate national systems (India's UPI and Nepal's NPI) — it is NOT a common currency, a banking union, or merchant-payment (P2M) rollout. Nepal's 'NPI' (run by NCHL) is distinct from India's NPCI.

Problematisation
Cross-border payments raise interoperability, AML/KYC, data-localisation and currency-settlement challenges; uneven digital access in Nepal limits reach.
Way-forward
Expand to P2M, ensure robust AML/cybersecurity safeguards, lower remittance costs toward SDG targets, and replicate the model across South Asia.
