India opens the 13th BRICS Urbanisation Forum on 'Cities for People' under its 2026 chairship

Hosted by the Housing & Urban Affairs Ministry, the two-day forum brings together urban ministers from the expanded BRICS to deliberate inclusive, climate-resilient and people-centred urban futures.

What happened

For Prelims

For UPSC: India opened the 13th BRICS Urbanisation Forum ('Cities for People') under its 2026 chairship, convening the expanded BRICS on inclusive, climate-resilient urban development. Anchor the expanded BRICS membership, India's 2026 chairship theme, MoHUA's urban missions (AMRUT/Smart Cities/PMAY-U), SDG 11/New Urban Agenda, and the distinction between sectoral forums and the leaders' summit/NDB.
What it is NOT: The Urbanisation Forum is a sectoral ministerial track under India's BRICS chairship — NOT the leaders' BRICS Summit, and not a binding treaty body. BRICS itself is an informal grouping with no charter or permanent secretariat (its financial arms are the NDB and CRA).
