DigiLocker onboards 68 electricity DISCOMs, putting digital power bills in reach across 35 States/UTs

India's flagship document wallet under Digital India now lets electricity consumers access issuer-sourced digital bills directly in the app — a step in building the country's digital utility ecosystem.

What happened

For Prelims

For UPSC: DigiLocker onboarded 68 electricity DISCOMs, making issuer-sourced digital bills available across 35 States/UTs — extending its trusted-issuer document model to utilities. Anchor DigiLocker's identity (2015, Digital India, MeitY), the IT Act-based legal parity of DigiLocker documents with originals, the issued-vs-uploaded distinction, and its place in India's Digital Public Infrastructure / India Stack.
What it is NOT: DigiLocker-stored issued documents have legal validity at par with originals under IT Act rules — they are NOT mere scanned copies; the new electricity bills are issuer-sourced, not user-uploaded. DigiLocker (MeitY document wallet) is also distinct from UMANG and the Account Aggregator framework.
